Abstract
The hydrology of the Canadian Prairies is dominated by cold regions processes, such as wind redistribution and sublimation of snow, infiltration to frozen soils, snowmelt largely driven by solar radiation and runoff dominated by overland flow over level terrain. The hydrography is equally complex, as it is dominated by depressions, such that the fractions of drainage basins contributing to streamflow are dynamic. Very few hydrological models correctly simulate the cold regions processes and basin-scale responses, and none incorporate the detailed local-scale hydraulics required to calculate flooded areas. Conversely, existing hydraulic models which can simulate flooding do not have the ability to simulate Canadian Prairie hydrological processes.
