Abstract
Operational flood forecasting in Canada is currently carried out at the provincial/territorial level, but the rising costs and impacts of floods necessitate a coordinated national approach. To achieve this, a more cohesive flood forecasting framework is required, allowing for the implementation of advanced prediction capabilities across different entities responsible for flood forecasting. This chapter outlines some ongoing efforts toward achieving a national flood forecasting approach in Canada, highlighting the unique challenges related to cold region processes. It puts forth recommendations for the development of a national flood forecasting framework, emphasizing the importance of cooperation, well-defined governance, and enhanced knowledge mobilization.
