Gyirong sits on the northern slopes of the Himalayas. Local high-altitude tributaries (such as the Lhende Khola / Lhende River) drain southward through deep gorges, crossing the border into Nepal where they feed into the Bhote Koshi / Trishuli River, and eventually into the major Narayani (Gandaki) River basin flowing into the Ganges.
