The Impact of Deciduous Forest and Topography on Snowpack Dynamics in a Headwater Catchment in the Southern Andes Cordillera
Abstract
This dataset contains the meteorological forcing data and model configuration files
used to simulate snow accumulation and melt processes in a headwater catchment
of the Southern Andes Cordillera, Chile, using the Cold Regions Hydrological Model (CRHM).
A first model configuration includes four Hydrological Response Units (HRUs)
representing the locations of snow observations under open and under-canopy conditions
on north- and south-facing slopes. This configuration was used for model evaluation
through comparison with observed snow depth and snow water equivalent.
A second configuration includes twenty HRUs representing an elevation gradient
combined with slope aspect and canopy cover. This configuration was used to analyze
spatial patterns of snowpack dynamics after model evaluation.
The same meteorological forcing was used for all simulations.
This dataset accompanies the manuscript by Bernal-Mujica et al. (2026).

# Data and model configuration for snow–forest interaction study in the Southern Andes
This repository contains the meteorological forcing data and model configuration files
used in the study:
Bernal-Mujica, A., Krogh, S. A., & McPhee, J. (2026).
"The impact of deciduous forest and topography on snowpack dynamics
in a headwater catchment in the Southern Andes Cordillera".
The files support the implementation of the Cold Regions Hydrological Model (CRHM)
used to simulate snow accumulation and melt under different canopy cover,
slope aspect, and elevation conditions in the Upper Renegado Creek Catchment, Chile.

### Meteorological forcing
Meteorological forcing data used to drive all CRHM simulations, including air temperature,
relative humidity, wind speed, precipitation, and incoming shortwave radiation.
The same forcing dataset was used for all model configurations.

### Model configuration files
Two CRHM configuration files are provided, corresponding to the two spatial model setups
described in the manuscript:
- **[CRHM_parameters_setup_4HRU.txt]**
CRHM configuration for the four-HRU setup representing snow transect locations,
differentiated by slope aspect (north/south) and canopy condition (open/under canopy).
This configuration was used for model evaluation against field observations.
- **[CRHM_parameters_20HRU.txt]**
CRHM configuration for the twenty-HRU setup representing an elevation gradient
combined with slope aspect and canopy cover. This configuration was used to analyze
snowpack dynamics across elevation bands.
Both configuration files include HRU definitions and model parameter settings.
Model parameters are identical across configurations unless explicitly stated in the manuscript.

- Field observations (snow depth, SWE, LAI) used for model evaluation are described in the manuscript
and associated supplementary material.
- No post-processing scripts or derived outputs are included in this repository.
- All simulations were performed using CRHM with an hourly time step.
